Collioure is a seaside Mediterranean town and commune a few kilometers north of the Spanish border in the French department of Pyrenees-Orientales. It is also the name of a fine full bodied red wine produced here in one of the smallest AOC vignards in France. The ancient terraced vines in the hills behind the town also provide tiny sunbaked grapes for the famous Banyuls (Banyuls AOC) aperitif and desert wine.
Collioure is famous throughout France for its 3-day August 15th celebration, which attracts twice its population in visitors, who come to see the town's bodegas and fireworks.
The District of Collioure is classified seaside and tourist resort by a decree of August 7th, 1973. Today, the tourist population has known a progression of about 40% spread over every month of the year, with of course a frequentation pole from June 1st to August 31st.
The tourism became the first industry of the city. Its hotel structure is spread over fifteen hotels, representing 341 rooms, to which it is advisable to add two camp-sites of a capacity of reception of approximately 300 places and 2.492 second homes (apartments and rental studios). However, the Municipality worked to maintain and develop other economic axes as compatible with the tourist activity as with a voluntarist policy of protection of the site and environment: the commercial activity, mainly related to tourism, of course, but also health, and of course the traditional activities of vine and anchovy.
